HUGE THANKS TO ALL FILMMAKERS THAT SUBMITTED THEIR WORK FOR GLIMMER 2011 – NOW THE SELECTION PROCESS STARTS…

We have again made the Royal Mail employees work extra hard in the HU1 area, with bag after bag of films from across the world arriving here at HF HQ. Films from as far away as New Zealand, Nepal and Peru, as well as a whole bunch from the UK and off course; good old Hull.

Now we are looking forward to a fortnight of no sleep, plenty of coffee and watching of film to ensure we collate the finest selection, ready for you to enjoy during the festival, which will take place at various venues across the city from the 6th to the 9th of October.

As before, there will be the usual competition screenings; International, UK, Yorkshire and Hull, with the two first being eligible for the Anthony Minghella Award, provided by our Title Sponsors, The University of Hull.

In addition to these competitions, we have as you can see elsewhere on this site, got the ‘Online Competition’ up and running, and after some initial teething problems, this is now fully active, and filmmakers can enter work there until the week before the festival.

We are still looking for Volunteers to join our team, so if you, or anyone you know, is interested in helping GLIMMER happen, please get in touch through the usual channels: office@hullfilm.co.uk or phone the office on 01482 381 512.

Finally, for now, please follow us on Twitter @Hull_Film and ‘Like’ us on Facebook, and help spread the word.

We here at HULL FILM are getting very excited: For the first time we are giving Filmmakers the opportunity to enter a new competition for Best Online Short for GLIMMER: The Hull International Short Film Festival, taking place from 6th to the 9th October this year.

We are inviting filmmakers from across the globe to upload their work to our website for our consideration, but possibly more importantly, we are giving you, the public, the opportunity to have your say, and vote on the submitted entries.

We are inviting Filmmakers to enter their film for “Best Online Short” for GLIMMER: The Hull International Short Film Festival, taking place from 6th to the 9th October 2011. We will be giving the public, the opportunity to vote on the submitted entries so enter now to be considered!

This is how it will work:

Filmmakers; Submit your film and completed entry click here for more details
Each fortnight a new long-list of films will be made available to view and be voted on.
The film that gains the most votes in each round will automatically go on and be entered onto the shortlist for the final Competition during GLIMMER.

From this shortlist, two winners will emerge: one as decided by the GLIMMER Jury, and one decided by popular vote – that’s you people – so get involved and get voting!

We are accepting films of any genre; narrative, documentaries, music videos, animations, experimental work…anything goes – surprise us with your imagination!

GLIMMER; The Hull International Short Film Festival, is now in its 9th year, and is the largest film festival dedicated to Short Films in the North of England.

During its existence, we have screened thousands of shorts from all over the world, each year featuring many World and UK premieres, all eligible for the Awards on offer, which have ranged from £1000 to £250.

The award for our new Online Competition will be £1010 (see what we did there? Zeros and Ones) subject to funding confirmation.

Since 2009, the International and UK awards have been named ‘The Anthony Minghella Awards’ in honour of the late, great Oscar winning Director, who not only studied here in Hull, but later returned to be a lecturer at the University Of Hull.

We expect the 2011 edition of GLIMMER to be even more exciting and stimulating than in previous years, and with this new Online Competition, as well as a retrospective of Tony Hill’s work, and new commissioned works, to mention but a few things, we are well on our way towards making that happen.

Join us in the Fun of Film and help us make GLIMMER 2011 the best festival to date! Click here now to upload your film!

FILMMAKERS ONCE AGAIN ABLE TO CHOOSE OWN ENTRY FEE AS GLIMMER : THE 9th HULL INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 6th – 9th OCTOBER 2011 MAKES ITS CALL FOR ENTRIES INCLUDING A BRAND NEW ONLINE COMPETITION

The 9th edition of GLIMMER: The Hull International Short Film Festival will take place from 6th – 9th October 2011, and, once again, is inviting filmmakers to take part in the biggest short film festival in the North of England.

During its 8th edition – it’s most successful ever – GLIMMER screened in excess of 160 films, more than 40 of which were premieres, from across the world, and awarded more than £2000 of prize money to filmmakers

Presenting a diverse selection of films, including dramas, documentaries, artist’s film and video and animation, the selected films for the 2011 edition will be eligible for such awards as the Glimmer International Award, Glimmer UK Award, Glimmer Yorkshire Award and Glimmer Hull Award, all of which will, once again, come with cash prizes for the winning filmmakers. (Pending Funding)

New this year is the Glimmer Award for Best Online Short, as voted for by our online audiences. Filmmakers will shortly be able to upload their shorts to the Hull Film website for consideration, and each week, a winner will be announced, automatically entering it in the competition programme for Best Online Short. More details on this competition and how to enter will be announced here shortly.

Submitted films must be under 45 minutes long and made after 1st January 2009. (submissions for online competition must have maximum duration of 8 minutes) Aside from these restrictions, GLIMMER encourages people to send in films of all types and genres. GLIMMER also welcomes music video submissions

SUBMISSION FEES?

For the past two GLIMMER Festivals we have allowed filmmakers to choose how much they wish to pay in submission fees (if, indeed, they want to pay anything at all)

As this approach has proven very popular and a great success, we will continue to provide Filmmakers with the choice of what they can afford. It is hoped that this, as far as we are aware, unique system of entry fees will continue to encourage people to enter their films into the festival.

Glimmer Interim Director Espen Jensen said:
“For those of you who thought we had vanished; think again – we’re here, and we’re back and very excited about being able to announce the call for submissions for GLIMMER ’11! As in previous years we are accepting films from anyone, anywhere of any genre, but new this year is the introduction of a new Competition. Alongside Awards for best International, UK, Yorkshire and Hull production, we are launching a competition for films made specifically for the www, so go to our website and get your work to us!”

Full information on submitting films to GLIMMER: The 9th Hull International Short Film Festival can be found on the entry form, which can be downloaded here.

The Hull based filmmaker Ryan Braund, who won the Best Hull Short Award at Glimmer ’10 for his ‘Four Thieves And The Not-So-Sweet Shop’, have spent the summer shooting his first feature film, on location on Humber Street in Hull’s old Fruitmarket.

The result is ‘SAFEHOUSE‘ – a gritty, in your face, action thriller set sometime in the near future.

As the production crew used my office as a storage facility for their kit during the shoot, I can certainly vouch for the fact that they worked long, hard hours, on a shoestring budget, hell-bent on producing a great piece of work!

So, having followed Ryan and the rest of his gang throughout the project, I am very excited to see that all their hard work and enthusiasm has paid off, and urge all of you to support the film when it is released.

Meanwhile, here is the first, full length, trailer – enjoy and help spread the word!

“As they retreat after a heist, a gang of petty thieves become live ‘test subjects’ for a new, high-tech police weapon…”

The Anthony Minghella Award for Best International Short
(With a prize of £1000 sponsored by the University of Hull)

Plastic Bag

Dir. Ramin Bahrani, USA, 2009, 18 mins
This elegiac story about the life of a plastic bag asks many fundamental questions about life: What is the purpose of living when you have no purpose? Why are our creations permanent yet purposefully obsolete? And if we were immortally useless, would our maker love us enough to create us so that we could die? You’ll never look at a carrier in the same way again.

With a special mention going to:

Aprilis Suskhi (April Chill)

Dir. Tornike Bziava, 2010, 15 mins
The Anthony Minghella Award for Best UK Short
(With a prize of £500 sponsored by the University of Hull)

Peter in Radioland

Dir. Johanna Wagner, UK, 2009, 10 mins
A carefully observed study of the director’s father Peter, who stubbornly remains in an analogue world.

With special mentions to:

Heartstrings

Dir. Rhiannon Evans, UK, 2009, 3mins

Collide-O-Scope

Dir. Naren Wilks, UK, 2009, 3 mins

The GLIMMER Award for Best Yorkshire Short
(Sponsored by the Hull School of Art and Design with a prize of £250)

Uncle David

Dir. Shyla Lee, UK, 2009, 15 mins
A fascinating documentary about how one man is single handedly using his retirement years to try and improve his neighbourhood. For the last 5 years David has been walking around his local streets with his dog Meg picking litter and removing graffiti from walls and trees. He finds it difficult to pass neglected public spaces and feels the need to try and improve the physical and social landscape around him.

With a special mention to

Scent

Dir. Darren Bolton, UK, 2009, 17 min

The GLIMMER Award for Best Hull Short
(Sposnored by Hull City Council with a prize of £500)

Four Thieves & The Not-So-Swet Shop

Dir. Ryan Braund, UK, 2009, 13 mins
A gang of sweet-toothed thieves attempt to steal the world’s largest gobstopper from a cunning old man. A sparkling fantasy with a decidedly sinister edge

The GLIMMER Audience Award
(Sponsored by the Portland Hotel)

Flesheating Feminists Eat the Pig

Dirs. Dan Van Heeswyck & Ed Hunter, UK, 2009, 10 mins
Zero budget undead mashup exploring elements of the male psyche, gender issues and toothbrushes. Not for the faint hearted, easily grossed out or men.
